Barber Reminisces

Photograph summary:
When barber Bill Hertan came to North Hollywood in 1924, he settled in a quiet, peaceful community nestled in the largely agricultural San Fernando Valley. Today, looking back on a half century of barbering, Hertan gazes out the front window of his shop on a busy Lankershim Boulevard that is much changed from the first time he drove down it.
Pictured are Bill Hertan, trimming the eyebrows of Chamber of Commerce manager, Barney Oldfield.

Yes he did 🤣

If only Mr. Hertan could see the Lankershim Boulevard of today, as the land of agriculture has transformed into a concrete jungle.

I can't even imagine such a quaint story appearing in the newspaper today. That's what makes George Brich's photography so interesting. Capturing the goings on of daily life during mid-century Los Angeles and its adjacent San Fernando Valley connects us all to a more grounded era where customers enjoyed listening to their local barber in contrast to today's breed who prefer listening to whatever's playing through their earbuds.

Many thanks for your appreciation of my photography.
Best wishes, George
