Focus On The Good Work You Do

Younited Front Pledge

I have a fondness for Edmund Burke, the British statesman and philosopher who said things like “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it” and “Liberty does not exist in the absence of morality.” He also said, “The hottest fires in***** are reserved for those who remain neutral in times of moral crisis.”

Right now, I’m focusing on another quote of his: “Never despair. But if you do, work on in despair.” It’s a timely quote that’s helping me stay focused and inspired doing the work I’m committed to.

For anyone who’s bogged down in despair while pondering the unmendable consequences of this election, I’d say it’s more positive to focus on the daily good you do instead.

That’s why I pledge to keep my nose to the grindstone doing any good I can. Honestly, I’m fired up, motivated, and inspired to do even more, mainly because that’s what it’ll take to thoughtfully navigate the darker times we now face. Actually, if Mexicans truly did vote for their parents’ deportation, we’re already knee-deep in a dark night of the soul.

It’s also why I’m calling on my better angels for help. If my heart closes, I’ll need them to open and fill it with their wisdom—the eternal wisdom that’s helped countless others throughout the world endure immoral, corrupt leaders.

Edmund Burke also said: “The council of despair is a declaration of irresponsibility; it is Pilate washing his hands.”

So I’d be pleased if you’d join me in my pledge by keeping your focus on the good work you do. Whether that’s caring for your kids or grandkids, helping an elder, volunteering for a good cause, or being a decent person at your workplace, keep at it and take it to the next level if you can. People need reassurance and a restoration of faith in our common humanity.

Not one of us should sit around and despair. Nor can we afford to wash our hands of Trump or let the chips fall where they may, because what is done to us and our nation under his rule, not the rule of law—and how that impacts us, our children, and grandchildren—remains very much our business, and the business of all good citizens.

Oh Elisa, thank you for this message. I will join you in your pledge, to continue as much as I can in service to all humanity God graciously guides me to. Lack of energy, feeling if despondent, are the tool of evil, and not an excuse to live out and share our God gifted gifts. Thank you.

I know you will. What you've created can be exhausting work, but for the good of all. I'm proud of what you've achieved. Keep your spirits up and remember to think locally, not globally. The real change happens at the community level and state, not the federal--and since the Supreme Court currently seems to favor states rights, any attempts to overreach by the new administration can be challenged by any state in federal court.

Present Valley

Thank you for this uplifting message and the introduction to the wisdom of Edmund Burke. At times like these I find it so helpful to turn to the ancients for hope and reminders.

I will join you in your pledge. Because I don't believe in coincidences I know this has happened for a higher reason than my mind is capable of figuring out...so I pray, sit in the holy unknowing and use my tools to keep me participating in life, holding on to hope, spreading joy, love and kindness where ever and whenever I can in my circle of influence. Dropping into despair does not serve me or anyone else.

Additionally I find that simply acknowledging my feelings of grief, sadness and anger when they arise is important so I
can attend to them and keep them moving through me...and not get stuck because that is fertile ground for despair to rear her head. She is a patient one!

A higher reason might be as simple as allowing voters to get it wrong and personally experience the unfortunate consequences of aligning with the voices of hate in their exercise of democracy.

I, too, am grateful for Edmund Burke's wisdom.

Count me in on your pledge to recognize and lean into my good works. Spreading positivity is vitally important, and if I can play a small role in that, I'm happy to do so.

Thank you for your thoughtful post.

Good works and positivity by millions of people will make the world a much better place a lot sooner than any government. Never minimize the good you contribute by doing what you do in the way you do it.
