Actually, one of the persons who commented on the story on YouTube works for Starbucks and says you get ten cents off if you bring your own cup. Not a lot but it can add up.
I didn't know I could take my own cup and get it filled at Starbucks. So thanks for this helpful update.
Beyond the environmental benefit, there is a health benefit to avoiding drinking hot coffee out of paper cups because they are actually lined inside with a plastic or polyethylene coating which leaches into the coffee itself. It may be one of the reasons 80% of Americans have plastic circulating in the bloodstream.

The majority of press Starbucks gets doesn't put them in a positive light, notably, their efforts to prevent employee unionization.
This news, however, seems positive. I hope the "bring your own mug" program gets them to their 50% waste reduction goal.
