I find working in the yard for a limited period is great for me. Even though there's some physicality involved, my mind is very much in the moment and my "inside" work doesn't even cross my mind during that time. The perfect escape.
Well I love this news! Now I have official permission to slack off during the day for a generous brain break and healthful rest. Sounds perfectly healthy to me. Why didn't someone tell me this before? Thank you so much for this fun news!
You're so welcome! It's so important! Now you need only figure out what types of "active rest" suit you best! Even though I'm retired, I enjoy walking out and about in nature. So relaxing for me. I also enjoy movie night with friends and simple dinner times with friends at our favorite restaurants.
That sounds fabulous. For me it would be going out for an ice cream or pastry--though that wouldn't be the most healthy thing to do. But I love to paint and miss having the time to do it, so that's got to be it for me. I just have to carve out the time now that I know it's the healthful thing to do. Thanks again for sharing this good news!
Some people resist the concept of meditation as active rest because they envision sitting uncomfortably cross-legged on the floor while trying to empty their minds—it doesn't sound doable or enjoyable.
However, put them in a comfy chair and have them do "relaxation breathing" and it's a different story. This is what I like to do in the afternoons to decompress for a few minutes.
And it is an outstanding way to decompress! Yes, it's all about what works for an individual. For me it's walking in nature either with my music or just listening to the surrounding sounds of movement and life.
